Earth Day – April 2018

Since 1970, Americans across our fair land have been celebrating Earth Day. In an effort to bring awareness to our fragile ecosystem, sustain the environment, and better care for both flora and fauna, focusing on how best to treat Mother Earth has garnered more and more support each year.
We’ve seen increases in sustainability measures like reusable shopping bags, less product packaging, and refillable container use. Folks are consciously choosing to recycle more and keep spending and travel local when they can. Public transportation users and hybrid or electric car usage has seen an uptick as people realize the impact their carbon footprints are leaving.

Environmental products are becoming safer and more ecological for long-term use. All in all, people have become far more aware of how their actions are impacting the air, water, and land we all inhabit across the planet and it’s been refreshing to be a witness to!
Here at Jerry’s Foods, we are fascinated by the stories our customers tell us about their efforts to do better by the planet. Caitlin M. states that she has greatly reduced the amount of plastic in her home by bringing a handful of reusable shopping bags with on every grocery run – more than she anticipates needing in a single shopping trip, just in case.
Mike H. says that he enjoys sticking to grass-fed beef – he says the flavor is far and away the best and he likes knowing his food source has been responsibly raised. Cynde G. shares that she enjoys working on projects with her grandchildren using recycled ice cream pails – everything from strawberry picking to toy storage to art projects!
We tip our hats to all of you as you work hand-in-hand this and every year on Earth Day to keep our environment in shape and provide a healthy land for future generations. While helping our planet can seem daunting after watching some documentaries or news reports, we encourage everyone to make small changes here and there – they all add up.
Follow the old adage, “Think Global, Act Local” as a good guiding principle when you can. Spicy Grilled Chicken with Wilted Spinach and Brown Rice

Prep and Cooking Time: 60 minutes
Serves: Two


  • 1½ teaspoons Simply Organic Cumin
  • ½ teaspoon McCormick Organic Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon McCormick Organic Ground Ginger
  • La Baleine Sea Salt
  • 1lb Smart Chicken Organic Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts
  • 1 cup Bergin Long Grain Brown Organic Rice
  • 2 smashed fresh organic garlic cloves
  • Spectrum Organic Sunflower Oil
  • 10 ounces Earthbound Farm Organic Baby Spinach, divided
  • ¼ cup Newman’s Own Organic Raisins
  • ¼ cup water
  • Organic Valley Butter for topping rice, optional




  1. Combine spices and 1 teaspoon coarse salt. Reserve ½ teaspoon of spice blend and set aside. Cut chicken breasts into six pieces each. Toss chicken pieces in remaining spice blend until evenly coated.

  3. Working in batches, grill chicken a few pieces at a time in an oiled pan over medium-high heat until browned, about 3 to 4 minutes. Flip; reduce heat to medium. Grill until cooked through.

  5. Prepare brown rice according to package directions. Meanwhile, cook garlic in oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until fragrant and just golden, about 30 seconds. Stir in half of the spinach, raisins, reserved ½ teaspoon of spice mixture, ¼ teaspoon sea salt, and water. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 seconds; push to side of skillet. Add remaining spinach. Cook until wilted, about 1 minute.

  7. Serve with chicken and rice.
